Emerald City Comic Con: Ursula (Ariel the Little Mermaid) **3st Place: FX
This costume was such a beautiful challenge. I’ve never self-patterned and all the sewn details pushed me right out of my sewing comfort zone! I even had to practice some engineering to get all the tentacles to light up and the eel heads to move (which they do, and their mouths open!)
If you are curious about how I made this costume, check out the competition book I put together. There are tons of pictures, explanations and inside details about the entire build.

I didn’t grab a lot of pictures in this costume. Fortunately, a local photographed did snap a really interesting shot of me behind the scenes of the Eastern Championship Cosplay Contest. What a face! Right?
For me, the most amazing moment in this costume was getting to walk across the stage in it. I was so worried I was going to fall off my heels, so I was ELATED to hit every mark.
The Eastern Championship of Cosplay was the biggest costume contest I’ve ever competed in. I was thrilled when I took 3rd place in my category: FX. I never really imagined myself as an FX cosplayer, but I guess with the glowing trident, crown, tentacles and moving eel heads, I probably should have been less surprised.
And finally, here’s a couple of amazing pictures my handler snagged along the way.
